After Effects Content Aware Fill, How to remove an object from video?

Description

Removing on object from photo maybe easy but removing on object from a video is more complicated because you must remove the object in all frames. but don’t worry at all you can do this by Content Aware Fill in After Effect. It has easy and simple steps.

Remove an object from video.

With the Content-Aware Fill feature, you can remove any objects such as mics, poles, people and any unwanted objects from your video with a few simple steps.

This process includes the following steps:

  • Masking the Subject
  • Tracking the Subject
  • Use Content Aware Fill

The first two steps are very simple, but there are a few things you should pay attention that to better removing the object.

Note that when you want to masked the object you should pay attention to the shadow of the object. In fact, you should mask the object completely (along with all the details related to it such as shadow).

For tracking you can use Mask Tracker or create key frames manually for mask path. In my opinion, the mask tracker gives better results. After tracking don’t forget to set mask on Subtract mode.

You should know that Content-Aware Fill has a dedicated panel in After Effects. You can open its panel from Window menu.

In the next step to removing object from video you should adjust the Content Aware Fill panel. this is really easy because its panel is very simple.

In the Content-Aware Fill panel, you should select the Fill Method, and set the Range that you want After Effects to analyse. Then click Generate Fill Layer Which Generate fill adds a Fill layer on top of the selected layer in the Timeline panel.

The layer contains sequences of images that After Effects analyzes while it generates fill layer.

Fill Method

In the Fill Method menu there are 3 methods to fill and replace the object that you want to remove an Object, Surface and Edge Blend.

  • Object: It fills the masked area by taking pixels from the current and surrounding frames. It estimates the motion of the scene behind the object and uses this to find appropriate color values. For best results, use this to remove moving objects, like a car on a road.
  • Surface: Replaces the surface of an object. For best results, use this for static and flat surfaces, like a stain on a shirt, or a sign on a building.
  • Edge Blend: It fills the masked area by sampling pixels at the edges of the masked area and blending them together, and renders fast. For best results, use this to replace static objects on surfaces that lack texture, like text on paper.

(The second example in the tutorial video)

In the Content-Aware Fill panel, apart from Fill Method, Range, there are other options such as Fill Target and Alpha Expansion.

Fill Target is the small preview of the area that Content-Aware Fill analyzes (masked area).

Use Alpha Expansion to increase the size of the area to fill. Content-Aware Fill does not require precise masking, and may offer better results when the area includes pixels outside the object being removed but you are suggested not to increase this amount too much.

I have explained about Create Reference Frame separately in another tutorial, which you can see it through this link: Create Reference Frame
